We know that South Australians who are homeless (including rough sleepers) or at risk of homelessness are unlikely to be able to maintain the social distance or hygiene practices that are so vital to their health and to reducing the spread of COVID-19 more generally.
SA Housing Authority is committed to working with you, our sector partners, to provide more assistance to people who are homeless during the COVID-19 emergency.
Rough sleeper response
In response to COVID-19, commercial accommodation has been provided for people who are rough sleeping. While in this accommodation, they have been receiving support from outreach service Street to Home whilst Hutt St and Baptist Care have assisted with meals.
Emergency accommodation is also available in country areas.
All service providers should follow their usual referral processes for emergency accommodation. This applies to metropolitan and country services.
The Authority will also work with SA Health to support any homeless people who are unwell with COVID-19 symptoms.
Aboriginal people from remote communities
As part of our response to COVID-19, we have helped Aboriginal people from remote communities to return safely to their home.
As the COVID-19 emergency unfolds, it is now more important than ever that we work together to provide the most effective and efficient services as possible to deliver positive outcomes for people experiencing homelessness.
If you need any further information about our COVID-19 response, please contact the Authority’s COVID-19 Incident Management Team at housingIMT@sa.gov.au. ✉

Contract managers are here to help you
The COVID-19 emergency has created increased demand for services across the homelessness sector, including information and advice, crisis accommodation and longer-term affordable housing.
Specialist Homelessness Services (SHS) have a critical role in supporting people experiencing homelessness to manage social distancing, and to support quarantine and self-isolation options. It is essential we continue to work together to deliver these vital services, despite the challenges posed by COVID-19.
If your organisation is experiencing increased demand and you require support, we encourage you to talk to your Contract Manager.
Working across Government
As well as working with sector partners, SA Housing Authority is also working with its partners within government, particularly Department of Human Services (DHS), to ensure a coordinated approach. The Authority and DHS are regularly participating together in online forums.
More information about these forums can be found on the Department of Human Services website.
