An online tool that enables members of the public to connect people sleeping rough with critical help services has received a national award.

The Street Connect website (www.streetconnect.sa.gov.au), developed by the SA Housing Authority in conjunction with the sector, was announced winner of the national award for Using Technology to Connect to the Community in the Best Government Agency category at the Australian Not-For-Profit Technology Awards.

This recognition on the national stage demonstrates that South Australia continues to be a leader in developing innovative housing services that improve housing outcomes.

Street Connect uses 'crowd-sourcing' of community knowledge about where people are currently sleeping rough to help Street to Home locate people they may not otherwise have made contact with. The website also assists the work of the Adelaide Zero Project, because people sleeping rough who are assisted can be added to the project's By-Name List.

Since its public launch in August 2018, more than 600 Street Connect referrals have been made. Of all the referrals where Street to Home's outreach team was able to make contact with the person referred, 13% were for someone who was sleeping rough and not currently connected with any homelessness services. For these people, the Street Connect referral was a critical step towards receiving support to address their homelessness.
