South Australian Government commits $500 million for affordable housing
Our Housing Future 2020-2030 is a once-in-a-generation strategy for a better housing future in South Australia. The 10-year plan to modernise and reform the housing system was developed in extensive consultation with key stakeholders, including the building and construction industry.
A key feature of the plan is State Government investment of more than $500 million to deliver 20,000 affordable housing solutions over the next decade. This will help more South Australians into home ownership and provide an important boost to the local building and construction industry.
This long-term strategy provides the certainty needed to spark investment and create more affordable housing options to better support our communities. While this is only the beginning of housing reform in South Australia, I am excited by the opportunity to collaborate more closely with the local building and construction industry through a range of projects that will boost the economy and create hundreds of jobs at a crucial time for the industry and our state.
We will soon begin working hand-in-hand with industry to increase the supply of affordable housing by 20,000 homes over the next decade. These significant demolition, construction and development opportunities include small, medium and large-scale works across the state, primarily through the strategy’s Affordable Housing Initiative and the Neighbourhood Renewal Initiative.
The $400 million Affordable Housing Initiative will see us work with the construction sector to deliver 1000 new affordable homes by 2025. This initiative will create new options in the housing market, building housing located and designed for affordable living.
Hundreds of new social, affordable and open market homes will be delivered through a $54 million neighbourhood renewal program. In partnership with builders and developers, we will deliver renewal projects that provide both a significant stimulus to the industry and increase housing diversity and neighbourhood amenity in our communities.
Development and partnerships opportunities are now being progressively released on the tenders.sa.gov.au website. All projects will be awarded through a fair and transparent tender process, giving you every chance to put forward your innovative proposals.
Currently, we are undertaking a three-year survey to assess the condition of our 34,000 public housing properties. We are in the second year of the survey, which will provide comprehensive data on all of our properties and highlight areas for future work and development. Work from this study will continue stimulate the building sector and lead to new projects.
This strategy was developed in partnership with industry needs, and we want that close partnership to continue as we implement the strategy. We want to work with you to achieve our collective goals to improve housing in South Australia. I invite you to continue to share your ideas and proposals by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org ✉
