Virtual Power Plant (VPP)

South Australia’s Virtual Power Plant is Australia’s largest virtual power plant. Forming a network of solar panels and Tesla Powerwall battery systems installed on thousands of SA Housing Trust homes, eligible households are guaranteed access to the lowest residential electricity rate in South Australia. Plus, the Tesla Powerwall installed on your home will provide you with power backup during an outage.

SA Housing Trust households will have access to more affordable, reliable, and secure electricity, all while increasing visibility into energy usage.

Not all Trust homes are able to have solar panels and/or Tesla Powerwall battery systems installed.

Community Batteries

SA Housing Trust households in Magill, Edwardstown and surrounds will soon have access to affordable and renewable electricity through the South Australian Government’s community battery system. The batteries store excess energy from the grid when renewable energy is abundant in South Australia and make it available at night during periods of high demand.

Access to community batteries will be granted to homes that cannot support solar panels or a battery system—such as those provided through the SA VPP. This means even more SA Housing Trust households can save money on their electricity bills every year.

Eligible residents will be invited to join.

Social Housing Energy Performance Initiative (SHEPI)

Up to 3,500 SA Housing Trust households will benefit from energy performance upgrades and greater comfort through the Social Housing Energy Performance Initiative (SHEPI). Upgrades will increase household comfort in hot and cold conditions, all while reducing energy consumption and related emissions.

Upgrades include roof insulation, replacing aged gas appliances with electric appliances, installation of LED lighting, draught proofing and upgraded glazing on east and west facing windows.

The rollout of energy performance upgrades has commenced and will increase over the coming years. If you are interested in learning more, email HousingSHEPI@sa.gov.au
