Michael Buchan

The SA Housing Authority's Chief Executive Michael Buchan reports to the Board and the Minister for Housing and Urban Development. He is responsible for ensuring the Authority continues to be at the forefront  of homelessness and public housing  services and support in the South Australian community.

Michael was appointed the inaugural Chief Executive of the SA Housing Authority in January 2019 after leading the machinery of government changes which separated the operations of the South Australian Housing Trust back into an independent stand-alone statutory corporation.

Michael’s executive management career spans more than 20 years with experience in public and private commercial finance, residential and commercial property development, public policy development and organisational and executive leadership.

Michael is driven to improve access to safe, affordable and appropriate housing for all South Australians. Above all, Michael is passionate about supporting and developing people to achieve their best by focusing on staff success and wellbeing.

With a focus on outcomes, Michael has continually led change to deliver better services and products for people. The focus on achieving real and tangible outcomes has led to many nation leading and award winning affordable housing projects and most recently the development of the homelessness Alliancing contracting model designed to better respond to the challenging social problems of homelessness.

Prior to his current appointment, Michael held senior leaderships positions within Renewal SA and the former Land Management Corporation including sitting on various private sector development Boards and advisory bodies. He is currently a member of the Flinders University advisory council for the Centre for Social Impact, and a Director of AHURI.

Michael holds a Bachelor of Economics and a Bachelor of Commerce as well as professional accounting qualifications as a Fellow with CPA Australia.
