Housing SA and community housing providers have occupancy standards to minimise under occupancy or overcrowding in public housing:

  • no more than 2 people share a bedroom
  • parents should have a separate bedroom, they aren’t required to share a bedroom with a child
  • couples may share a bedroom
  • children aged 4 and under of any gender may share a bedroom
  • children aged 17 and under of the same gender may share a bedroom
  • children aged 5 to 17 shouldn’t share a bedroom with a child of the opposite gender aged 4 and under
  • single household members aged 18 and over, and any children who aren’t related need a separate bedroom.

Housing SA and community housing providers can offer a different size property, subject to the availability of stock and specific needs of the household. There are limited numbers of 4 bedroom properties available.

The number of bedrooms is based on the number of people in the household.
