The SA Housing Trust has recorded its first significant net increase in public housing this century, with 158 additional public homes delivered in 2024–25, according to figures published in the Report on Government Services 2026.
This milestone reflects major investment in public housing, with 868 new homes now complete and a further 225 homes under construction, due for completion by March.
The growth builds on recent improvement programs, such as the Vacancy Program, that returned 350 long vacant homes to service and upgraded more than 3,000 existing properties, helping meet the needs of families across the state.
The report also shows that:
- South Australia is the best performing mainland state for social housing supply, with 550 dwellings per 10,000 residential dwellings, compared with the national average of 380.
- Median wait times for newly allocated public housing are lower than the national average (six months compared with nine).
- South Australia has the lowest proportion of overcrowded households in public housing nationally.
Allocation of public housing places strongly prioritises people with the greatest need, above the national average.
These results demonstrate the Trust’s ongoing commitment to delivering safe, secure and suitable homes and to growing and renewing public housing for current and future demand.
