Aerial view of Purrkanaitya Aboriginal Elder Village construction

Construction is well underway on the Purrkanaitya Aboriginal Elder Village, a new community designed to support Aboriginal Elders with culturally‑appropriate housing and shared spaces.

This major project, in the southern suburbs, is one of the first of its kind, creating new housing as well as a community space “for all Elders” – the meaning of Purrkanaitya.

The village will include common areas, outdoor fire pits and accessible accommodation to support ageing in place. A total of 40 units are being built on culturally significant Aboriginal‑owned land.

Construction is expected to finish in mid‑2026 and includes work by local Aboriginal businesses, subcontractors and apprentices.

The project is a collaborative effort between Aboriginal Community Housing LimitedHousing Australia, the South Australian Housing Trust, the Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation, and the Kaurna Yerta Aboriginal Corporation (KYAC).
