The Authority will be head-leasing 15 properties over the next three years to ACHL to deliver an AFSS Supported Independent Living Services (SILS) program, Skillin It.

The partnership has been co-designed around each of the Closing the Gap Priority Reforms and supports the capacity of Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations to deliver innovative services for Aboriginal people, otherwise not served by the Authority. The program assists young Aboriginal people, aged 16 to 18, via wrap around mentor support, to acquire independent living skills such as budgeting, shopping, cooking, and self-care. More than 20 Aboriginal young people are anticipated to benefit from the program.

Doorways 2 Construction student graduation

Photo of the 28 graduating students from Doorways to Construction28 students from the Doorways to Construction (D2C) program have graduated after their hands-on trade experience refurbishing one of our southern suburbs’ homes. Some of the trade skills that the students of Reynalla East College picked up during this program include carpentry, tiling, demolition, concreting and painting. Eight graduates have apprenticeships already, an outstanding result for these young people and a tribute to their dedication and hard work.

Commencing in 2001, the D2C program started in collaboration with Construction Industry Trading Board (CITB) and secondary schools to train tradespersons of the future. We have made 60 homes available over the past 20 years through this program, giving back to an industry that supports the Authority and young people.
