Onsite backyard Studio frontage and garden

The SA Housing Authority is working with youth charity Kids Under Cover (KUC) to support young people in the northern region who may be at risk of homelessness, by creating more room at home with studio accommodation in backyards, in public housing homes in the northern suburbs. The Authority is providing $2.3 million to KUC for 42 studios, with 12 already onsite in backyards helping families in need.

Under the program, studios are placed in the backyard of a family member or carer and provide safe and secure housing for young people aged 12 to 25 years. The studio gives the young person their own space, while keeping them safely at home with their carer. The studios are being paced in the Authority’s northern region, including the Barossa Valley and Gawler Belt regions, to Two Wells in the northeast, Allendale in the North and to Springton and Eden Valley in the northwest regional areas.

It is estimated 64 young people will be assisted. By intervening early, the studios alleviate pressures that can lead to homelessness such as family breakdown, overcrowding and other challenges.

The one or two-bedroom studios, with ensuite bathroom provide medium to long-term accommodation. Families also have access to other support services as needed.
